According to the Polish Prime Minister, if Russia is the one who ordered the killing, the case takes on a serious international dimension. The assassination could further heighten tensions between Poland and Russia.
Skrepiecki, whose real name is Robert Kużowkov, was born in 1981. He lived in the Altai region until 2021, after which he emigrated to Poland for political reasons. The Polish government offered him protection, which the artist refused.
The victim created caricatures depicting Russian and Belarusian dictators Vladimir Putin and Alexander Lukashenko, the leader of Chechnya Ramzan Kadyrov and his son Adam, the Patriarch of Moscow Kirill, Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny, the former Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin, and other prominent figures from Russia.
In connection with the artist's death, two Belarusian citizens were detained, but were later released. The investigation into the assassination is ongoing.
