44-year-old cartoonist Semion Skripiecki, a critic of Vladimir Putin, was shot dead on Monday morning in Biała Podlaska. Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated on Wednesday that the killing bears all the hallmarks of a political murder.
The perpetrator fired three times at the artist with a revolver. When Skripiecki fell, the attacker approached and fired two further shots at close range.
According to Polish services, both the police and the national intelligence service offered protection to Skripiecki, but the artist refused it for reasons unknown.
Two Belarusian citizens were detained in connection with the case, but were later released, according to judicial authorities. A manhunt for the perpetrator is under way.
Skripiecki, known by his artistic pseudonym, gained recognition for caricatures depicting Russian political figures, including Putin, Joseph Stalin, Ramzan Kadyrov, and Alexei Navalny. In 2021 he settled in Poland, claiming he feared political persecution in Russia.
In exile he maintained an oppositional stance and participated in events of the Russian opposition. The cartoonist repeatedly criticised the Ukrainian government on social media. Following these statements, the Myrotvorets website published his residential address.
Tusk added that if the killing was commissioned by Russia, it constitutes a very serious matter of international dimension. The case could revive historical tensions between Poland and Russia, which have intensified particularly since the shooting down of a drone attributed to Moscow in autumn 2025.
