Dominican homicide convict captured in Puerto Rico with Interpol red notice
A woman convicted of homicide in the Dominican Republic was detained on Tuesday in Puerto Rico after evading Dominican authorities and illegally entering the island, according to primerahora.com citing the Homeland Security Investigations office (HSI) in San Juan.
The woman arrested was identified as Ana Tahiri Acevedo Brito, who had an active arrest warrant and a red notice issued by the International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol). Such a notice constitutes a request to police forces throughout the world to locate and provisionally detain a person whilst their extradition or other legal proceedings are processed.
According to HSI San Juan, Acevedo Brito was convicted in 2022 and managed to escape the reach of Dominican authorities before arriving in Puerto Rico. Once on the island, she obtained employment as a carer in a private residential facility. Authorities also identify her as a suspect in offences linked to the financial exploitation of vulnerable elderly adults.
"As the investigative arm of the Department of Homeland Security, HSI continues working hand in hand with federal and international agencies to locate and arrest persons wanted for serious crimes and protect our communities," HSI San Juan stated.
The operation involved participation from the U.S. Marshals Service and the Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) division.
