Dominican woman with arrest warrant for homicide detained in Puerto Rico

A Dominican citizen wanted for alleged murder in the Dominican Republic was detained on Tuesday in Puerto Rico, according to diariolibre.com. The operation was carried out by agents from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) in conjunction with the United States Marshals Service (US Marshals) and Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO).

The detainee was identified as Ana Tahiri Acevedo Brito. An arrest warrant issued in Dominican territory weighed against her, as well as a Red Notice from the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol), HSI confirmed in an official statement.

According to the federal agency, Acevedo Brito had entered Puerto Rico irregularly. Once on the island, she obtained employment as a caregiver in a private residence, where she is also suspected of having committed financial exploitation against elderly persons.

HSI emphasised in its statement the importance of cooperation with federal and international bodies to locate and capture individuals wanted for serious crimes. The agency, attached to the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS), urged citizens to verify employment background and legal authorisation to work in the country before hiring staff for homes or businesses.

The authorities have not specified when Acevedo Brito will be transferred to the Dominican Republic nor have they offered details about the judicial process she would face in the country.
