Man convicted in France for arms trafficking arrested in Tavira

The Judicial Police (PJ) arrested in Tavira a 40-year-old man sought by French authorities for arms trafficking and money laundering, according to rr.pt. The arrest was carried out by the Criminal Investigation Unit, in execution of a European arrest warrant issued by French justice.

The suspect, a Portuguese-French citizen, was convicted in France to a five-year prison sentence for the crimes in question. The facts date back to 2023, when French customs officers intercepted, at a motorway toll booth, the vehicle the man was driving.

Inside the vehicle were found, concealed, €18,720 in cash, two grenades, an unloaded pistol, an empty magazine and five 9 mm ammunition rounds.

The investigations conducted by French authorities made it possible to identify, according to the PJ, "several other cases of transport of prohibited goods and money, between Portugal and Normandy". The location and subsequent arrest of the suspect in Portuguese territory resulted from police and judicial cooperation between the two countries.

The detainee will be brought before the Court of Appeal of Évora for the application of a preventive measure.
