Fábio Paim accused of rape in Faro: trial begins on 18 November
The former footballer is charged with three crimes, including the rape of a university student in Faro in April 2023. DNA found on the victim's clothing is believed to have been decisive in identifying the suspect.

Former Sporting prospect faces trial for rape, breaking and entering, and criminal damage
Fábio Paim will face trial for three crimes: rape, breaking and entering, and criminal damage. The case is related to the alleged sexual assault on a university student in Faro that occurred in the early hours of 20 April 2023. The trial is scheduled to begin on 18 November, according to information released to the press and reported by flash.pt.
According to the public prosecutor's accusation, the former footballer allegedly saw a young woman he knew in a nightclub and followed her to the apartment where she lived with other classmates. At the location, he allegedly forced his way into the residence. The victim of the alleged sexual abuse was not the young woman who initially caught his attention, but rather one of her flatmates.
According to the description of the facts in the accusation, one of the residents woke up to noise and confronted the man, who was attempting to enter one of the bedrooms. The student was allegedly grabbed by her hair and thrown against a wall before the alleged rape. Fábio Paim allegedly also attempted to access other rooms in the house, leaving only after being stopped by other residents.
DNA on victim's clothing identified the suspect
The investigation allegedly led to Fábio Paim through biological traces recovered from the young woman's clothing. Witness statements were also gathered from people present in the same nightlife venue that night. The former footballer was subsequently questioned by the Judicial Police and constituted as a suspect. According to Correio da Manhã, he was not brought before a judge during this phase, by decision of the Public Prosecutor's Office.
A career that fell short of expectations
Trained at Sporting, Fábio Paim stood out as a teenager and was considered one of the most promising talents in Portuguese football. His name was even associated with Cristiano Ronaldo, with whom he shared training at the Alvalade club. In 2008, he was loaned to Chelsea, then managed by Luiz Felipe Scolari. His senior career, however, fell far short of the trajectory many had anticipated, and in 2018 he left professional football while representing Leixões.
At the end of 2023, in an interview with British newspaper SunSport, the former winger acknowledged opportunities he felt he had wasted. "I was earning a lot of money and I created the illusion that I didn't need to make an effort. It's impossible for a person like me to be a millionaire. I regret some of my choices," he admitted. On the priorities he had throughout his career, he was direct: "The talent was there, but my mind was not. My head was on women and parties, everything except football."
History of accusations and drug-trafficking conviction
This is not the first legal proceeding involving Fábio Paim's name. In May 2015, when playing for FK Nevežis in Lithuania, a rape accusation emerged. The player denied being detained and classified what happened as a misunderstanding. In June of that same year, the newspaper Record reported that he had been cleared.
Before that, in 2012, he was taken to Cascais police station after a young woman accused him of rape. News from that time also referred to suspicions related to indecent exposure and voyeurism. This case ended without a rape conviction.
In 2019, he was arrested in Estoril as part of a process related to cocaine. The situation resulted in a conviction to four and a half years in prison for drug trafficking. In the same interview with SunSport, Fábio Paim spoke about the impact the sentence had on him and his family. "Prison was very hard, both for me and for my family. But it was good. I learned that what you get easily is not good for you," he said, adding that the experience forced him to reconsider the choices he had made. "Prison is not a place for a kid like me," he lamented.
From television to adult cinema
Away from the pitch, Fábio Paim continued to make an appearance in the media. In 2025, he joined the cast of Big Brother Verão on TVI, returning to public attention. The former footballer also made news for having participated in an adult film.
