Neonazi Group MAL Had List with Over 100 Targets in Portugal, Including Marcelo and Montenegro

Neonazis Planned Attacks on Marcelo, Montenegro and More Than a Hundred Other Personalities

The Public Prosecutor's Office accused nine people of crimes associated with neonazi ideology within the framework of the Lusitano Armillary Movement (MAL), as reported by cnnportugal.iol.pt. Among the plans identified by investigators was an attack directed at the residence of Prime Minister Luís Montenegro — but the group's target list went far beyond that.

The defendants belonged to MAL, an extreme-right organisation that, according to the prosecution, was preparing aggressive actions against politicians, journalists, academics and Portuguese civil society organisations. The list of targets identified by the Public Prosecutor's Office is extensive and includes figures from various areas of public life.

Politicians, Commentators and Public Figures in the Sights

Among the individual targets are the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, former President Cavaco Silva, and former Prime Minister António Costa. The current head of Government, Luís Montenegro, and Marques Mendes also appear on the list, as well as Francisco Pinto Balsemão and Carlos Moedas.

The list also includes names such as Ricardo Araújo Pereira, Nuno Markl, Miguel Sousa Tavares, Daniel Oliveira, Ricardo Costa and Ana Gomes, among many other commentators, journalists and media and cultural figures. It also includes academics such as Raquel Varela and Fernando Rosas, as well as lawyers, psychologists and activists identified by the group.

Other names on the list include Joacine Katar Moreira, Mariana Mortágua, Joana Mortágua, André Ventura — who has since expressed willingness to be heard in an inquiry commission — and also Isabel Moreira, Ana Catarina Mendes, Pedro Delgado Alves and several other deputies and former government officials.
