Woman with 26 Spanish arrest warrants captured in Lisbon

The Judicial Police detained in Lisbon the most-wanted fugitive in Spain for fraud crimes, the force announced. The 30-year-old woman was subject to 26 arrest warrants and had been sentenced to one year and nine months in prison, according to CNN Portugal.

In a statement, the Judicial Police describe how the suspect stayed in a hotel in southern Spain in September 2022 with no intention of settling the bill, valued at €418. She presented the receptionist with a document showing a bank transfer of €4,018, claiming she had made an error in the amount transferred.

The hotel employee believed the version presented and proceeded to refund the difference through an instant bank transfer.

In Portugal, the woman is said to have repeated the same scheme, having stayed with two minor children in hotel units in Lisbon and Coimbra without making any payment. The Judicial Police add that the suspect had previously been convicted in an earlier case and that various investigations are still ongoing.

Before her detention, Spanish authorities had requested authorisation to include the woman's name in the "National Campaign of the 10 Most-Wanted Fugitives".

Following her detention, the accused was brought before the Lisbon Court of Appeal, which ordered preventive detention as a precautionary measure.
