Fugitive jumps through window and scales wall to escape prison in Leiria
A 32-year-old man, resident in Lisbon and with dozens of cases involving theft, breach of trust and misuse of bank cards, fled the Leiria PSP Command by jumping through a window, scaling a wall and descending down a ravine to the street, according to Correio da Manhã.
The objective was to avoid being taken to prison to serve a sentence of two years and two months.
The detention happened unexpectedly: the suspect was in a shopping centre with his partner when he was recognised by a PSP officer who was off duty. With the support of the establishment's security staff, the officer took him to the police station to be questioned.
During questioning, the man claimed to feel unwell, citing being "hungover". He was then transferred to a room with better ventilation — and it was at that moment that he took the opportunity to flee, jumping through the window.
The PSP opened an internal investigation process and reported the situation to the Public Prosecutor's Office.
