The Judicial Police arrested a 39-year-old man as he attempted to recover 800 grammes of cocaine that he had buried in a pine forest area in Ribas, in the municipality of Figueira da Foz, district of Coimbra, reported Correio da Manhã.

The operation was conducted by inspectors from the PJ's Central Directorate, in execution of a detention warrant issued by the Department of Investigation and Criminal Action (DIAP) of Figueira da Foz.

The suspect was found at the location "digging the soil, armed with a mason's trowel, attempting to recover the narcotic substance". At that moment, "he offered violent resistance and attempted to flee the location", according to a statement from the Judicial Police sent to Lusa news agency.

The arrest resulted from prolonged surveillance work and information gathering. Monitoring operations of the suspect's movements allowed inspectors to anticipate the moment when he would travel to the pine forest to collect the drugs — which had been previously seized by the PJ before the man reached the hiding place.

The operation resulted in the seizure of approximately 800 grammes of cocaine, packaged in 53 sealed hermetic bags, 865 euros in cash and two vehicles. Telecommunications equipment was also collected as part of "a vast set of evidence elements", the PJ stated.

The detained man is being investigated for the crimes of drug trafficking, resistance and coercion against a public official, and assault and battery. He will be presented to the judicial authority for initial judicial interrogation and application of coercive measures.
