A 36-year-old man was arrested in Lisbon charged with 14 counts of child sexual abuse against a seven-year-old and one count of domestic violence, the Judicial Police (PJ) announced last Friday, according to Observador.
The crimes occurred throughout the month of May, in a family cohabitation context. The PJ clarified that the minor lived with the suspect and their respective family members, all foreign nationals from the same country.
The investigation was launched recently, after the child reported the incidents to her mother. The PJ became aware of the facts and initiated the necessary proceedings.
"The geographical proximity between those involved, combined with the circumstances ascertained, demonstrated the existence of risks of flight, continuation of criminal activity and disruption of the inquiry, justifying the arrest of the perpetrator," the police stressed.
The detainee was brought before a first judicial examination at Lisbon Court. He was subject to interim measures comprising periodic sign-in requirements, prohibition of contact with the victim and the victim's parents, and prohibition of leaving the country, with surrender of his passport.
