42-year-old man arrested in Almada for domestic violence and threats with bladed weapon

A 42-year-old man was arrested by the GNR in the municipality of Almada, suspected of physically assaulting his 49-year-old partner, coercing her to maintain sexual relations and threatening her with a bladed weapon, according to nowcanal.pt.
The arrest occurred on Thursday, following a request for assistance sent by the victim on the evening of 4 November. Unable to contact the authorities by telephone, the woman resorted to email to report the situation.
"In view of the gravity of the reported facts", the Setúbal Territorial Command of the GNR stated in a statement that officers "responded immediately to the request for assistance", dispatching a patrol to the scene.
In the course of the intervention, it was possible to establish that the suspect had physically assaulted the victim, coerced her to maintain sexual relations and threatened her with the use of a bladed weapon, which was subsequently seized.
The victim was taken to a hospital unit, where she received medical care, and was subsequently referred to a shelter providing support to victims of domestic violence, in order to guarantee her protection and safety.
The detainee appeared on Friday at Seixal Court, where he was subject to the precautionary measures of periodic check-ins — three times per week — and prohibition from approaching the victim.
