36-year-old suspect presented for questioning following arrest in Lisbon
A 36-year-old man was arrested in Lisbon, charged with 14 counts of sexual abuse of a seven-year-old child and one count of domestic violence, CNN Portugal reported on Friday.
According to the Judicial Police (PJ), the offences occurred over the course of May, in the context of family cohabitation. The minor lived with the suspect and their respective family members, all foreign nationals from the same country.
The PJ became aware of the facts recently, after the child reported the events to her mother. The authorities immediately launched the necessary investigative procedures.
"The geographical proximity between those involved, combined with the circumstances ascertained, demonstrated the existence of dangers of flight, continuation of criminal activity and obstruction of the inquiry, justifying the arrest of the perpetrator," the police emphasised in a statement.
The detainee was presented for initial judicial questioning at Lisbon Court. He was subject to measures of coercion including periodic presentations, prohibition of contact with the victim and her parents, and prohibition from leaving the country, with surrender of his passport.
