Remand in custody after detention for domestic violence in Odemira municipality
A 59-year-old man was remanded in custody after being detained by the GNR on suspicion of making death threats and committing physical assault against his 38-year-old partner in Odemira municipality, the Observador reported on Wednesday.
The GNR's Territorial Command for Beja informed in a statement that the suspect was brought before the Odemira Judicial Court in Beja district on Tuesday for his first judicial hearing. The court applied the most serious measure available.
Following the hearing, the defendant was transferred to Beja Prison, where he will await further proceedings, a GNR source confirmed to Lusa news agency.
The detention took place on Monday, carried out by the Investigation and Support Unit for Specific Victims (NIAVE) in Beja. According to the GNR, the investigation had been ongoing "for approximately one month" on suspicion of domestic violence.
As part of that investigation, the GNR established that the suspect "threatened to kill the victim and also exercised psychological violence and physical assault against her". During the operation, an arrest warrant not in flagrante delicto was executed and a domestic search warrant was carried out.
The search resulted in the seizure of a carbine, an air-powered weapon, and an alarm weapon.
