Four detained for domestic violence in the Alentejo in operations by NIAVE in Beja

The National Republican Guard (GNR) in Beja detained, in the past week, four people — three men and a woman — suspected of domestic violence in the councils of Vidigueira, Serpa and Odemira. According to diariocriminal.sapo.pt, the operations were conducted by the Nucleus for Investigation and Support to Specific Victims (NIAVE) of Beja's Territorial Command and resulted from three separate investigations.

Vidigueira: 24-year-old son assaults mother

In Vidigueira, a young man aged 24 was detained on suspicion of physical assault and continued psychological violence against his mother. This is a case of ascending domestic violence, in which the victim is the suspect's parent.

Following his first appearance before the Judicial Court of Cuba, he was subjected to the precautionary measure of preventive detention, replaced by preventive hospitalisation in a prison hospital — a decision that combines deprivation of liberty with mental health support.

Serpa: ex-girlfriend targeted for psychological violence

In the execution of an arrest warrant for an offence not caught in the act, the GNR detained in Serpa a man aged 41 suspected of exercising psychological violence against his ex-girlfriend. The case demonstrates that legal protection extends beyond the end of a relationship, provided that patterns of control, threats or coercion persist.

The Judicial Court of Serpa ordered the prohibition of contact with the victim, in any form or means, and the prohibition of approach within a radius of less than 500 metres — monitored through electronic surveillance.

Odemira: nonagenarian elderly woman mistreated by daughter and grandson

In Odemira, a woman aged 57 and her son, aged 24, were both detained on suspicion of physical mistreatment and psychological violence against a nonagenarian family member — mother-in-law and grandmother of the detainees, respectively — with whom they cohabited.

The court ordered the immediate removal of the suspects from the elderly woman's home, as well as the prohibition of approach within a radius of 500 metres and any contact with the victim. The case involves a person in a situation of extreme vulnerability, dependent on family members for daily care.

Co-ordination between local posts and specialised units

The operations were supported by personnel from the Territorial Post of Vidigueira and the Territorial Unit of Odemira, reflecting the co-ordination between the different units of the GNR in combating domestic violence — from local posts with proximity to communities to specialised investigation units.

The GNR reminds that domestic violence is a public crime, whereby, once a report is made, proceedings follow regardless of the victim's wishes. Complaints can be made through the Electronic Complaint Portal, the emergency number 112, at GNR posts, or through the applications App MAI112 and SMS Security, aimed at deaf citizens.
