Fire destroyed dwelling in Valadares following theft

The Judicial Police arrested a 62-year-old man suspected of setting fire to his son's house in Valadares, in the municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia, the force announced on Tuesday. According to Observador, the arrest follows crimes believed to have taken place on Thursday and Friday of last week.

In a statement, the PJ states that the suspect was identified based on "strong evidence of the commission of arson and aggravated theft crimes". The investigation indicates that the man forced open the door to his son's dwelling, stole some items, and then set a fire that completely destroyed the house.

The PJ also notes that the suspect maintains a conflictual relationship with his family. Following the fire, the arrested man's mother — an elderly woman aged 89 who lives in a dwelling adjacent to the affected property — required hospital treatment due to smoke inhalation.

The arrested man awaits presentation to the first judicial interrogation for the application of coercive measures, with the PJ not specifying the scheduled date.
