More than 20 employees of a psychiatric unit in Călărași County are being investigated for allegedly violating the rights of hospitalised patients. Searches are taking place both at the hospital and at the homes of the suspects.

More than twenty members of staff at a mental health centre in south-east Romania are under investigation. The case involves Săpunari Psychiatric Hospital, located in Călărași County, where employees are suspected of treating vulnerable persons in medical care with brutality.
On Wednesday, a large-scale operation was launched under the codename JUPITER. Romanian Police teams carried out twenty-four raids in several localities in the area. This initiative was supervised by the country's highest criminal court, alongside the leadership of the central structure of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Prosecutors at the territorial court in Călărași are overseeing the investigation, and law enforcement officers from the department specialising in serious cases participated in gathering evidence. According to information gathered so far, there are indications that hospital employees unjustifiably restricted the freedom of movement of some hospitalised patients and violated their fundamental rights.
Among the locations targeted by the authorities was the main building of the medical facility, where adults with mental disorders are treated. Other raids took place at the residences of medical and auxiliary staff members suspected of violent behaviour towards those under their care.
At the conclusion of the operation, approximately twenty-three members of the institution's staff are to be taken to police headquarters to give statements. The warrants under which they will be questioned were issued by the court. The operation also involved specialists from the fraud investigation service, forensic experts, and officers from local public order units and tactical intervention units.
