A taxi driver and two Brazilian foreigners were arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of human trafficking and human smuggling. The three were apprehended following a pursuit on Ir. M.N. Attaollahweg.

Special unit arrests taxi driver and two Brazilians for human smuggling

The special unit of the police in Western Region arrested three suspects on Wednesday, 11 February 2026 on suspicion of human trafficking and human smuggling, police reported via police.sr.

The three were in a vehicle on Ir. M.N. Attaollahweg. Following a pursuit, the vehicle was forced to stop. Police investigation revealed that taxi driver T.T. (56) was transporting two foreigners: N.R. (25) and F.M. (28), both of Brazilian origin. The two had shortly before illegally crossed to Suriname from Guyana in a so-called Go Fast boat.

All three suspects were arrested at the scene and taken to the police station for arraignment. Driving licences and mobile phones were seized in the interest of the investigation.

Following consultation with the Public Prosecutor's Office, the three were remanded in custody. On Thursday, 12 February 2026, the case, along with the suspects, was transferred to the Trafficking In Person (TIP) department, which will take over further investigation.
