Young man arrested with firearm in weapons deal at shopping centre
A nineteen-year-old has been taken into custody by officers from the Regional Assistance Team Paramaribo after he attempted to resell a firearm. The incident took place in the vicinity of the Hermitage Mall shopping centre in the Uitvlugt district. Two other people who were in the vehicle with him were released after questioning.
Police received information that a weapons transaction would take place. When the unit arrived, they found a shoulder-mounted rifle, calibre 22, along with a magazine and ten live rounds in the vehicle. These items were seized.
The youngest of the three turned out to have smuggled the weapon into the country undetected from the neighbouring country of French Guiana two days earlier. That morning, he had called his older brother to pick him up in the car and take him to the meeting place. The third passenger, a nephew of the driver, was completely unaware of the planned deal and was only along for company.
Upon further investigation, it emerged that the nineteen-year-old had long been on the radar of detectives in the eastern part of the country. He is suspected of having stolen outboard motors and illegally transported cars across the border. The public prosecutor has decided that this suspect will remain in custody for the time being.
