The Quick Response Team (QRT) arrested 23-year-old Y. van A. on Thursday at Commewijnestraat in Paramaribo. Waterkant reports that he is suspected of transferring SRD 73,000 without permission from his elderly grandmother's bank account to his own account.

The matter came to light on 6 December 2025. A daughter of the elderly woman wanted to withdraw money to do shopping for her sister, who was coming to Suriname for a holiday. To her surprise, there was insufficient balance on the account — only SRD 1,742 remained.

Further investigation revealed that SRD 73,000 had been transferred to the account of her nephew. The money on the account was originally intended for another daughter of the grandmother. Academisch Ziekenhuis Paramaribo (AZP) had deposited SRD 68,888 in the account, because the actual beneficiary did not have a Surinamese bank account herself.

The suspect is the youngest son of the deceased eldest sister of the complainant. He was staying temporarily with his grandmother, with the agreement that he would leave once his study papers for Colombia were in order. When his grandmother asked him to find alternative accommodation, he informed her on 21 November 2025 that he was leaving for Albina to work.

According to the complaint, the grandmother had not given her grandson permission to transfer money, nor had she provided him with her internet banking details. The complainant suspects that he obtained the access code at an unguarded moment.

Via WhatsApp, she confronted her nephew about the missing amount. According to the complaint, he admitted in the message that he had transferred the money to his own account. As an explanation, he stated that he had had no other choice, because he needed to find accommodation.

Following investigation by the specialised services SIGMA and CNTI, the QRT was able to arrest the suspect at his workplace. He is suspected of aggravated theft and has been remanded in custody following consultation with the Surinamese Public Prosecution Service.
