Examining magistrate releases Suribetshop employee after self-defence claim
A 31-year-old employee of Suribetshop was released on Friday by the examining magistrate. This was confirmed by her advocate Derrick Veira to Waterkant. The woman had been arrested earlier by Latour police on suspicion of serious assault.
Veira argues that his client did not act out of aggression, but defended herself. According to the advocate, the evidence in the dossier shows that the alleged victim sought out the confrontation himself and twice attempted to attack the employee with beer bottles.
Camera footage and statements from eyewitnesses would corroborate this account, according to Veira. Various bystanders reportedly also attempted in vain to prevent the alleged victim from launching the attacks.
The dossier further indicates that the alleged victim bothers others when she has been drinking alcohol, the advocate states.
The employee felt compelled to pick up a kitchen knife to protect herself. Veira emphasises that this was necessary given the repeated attacks to which his client was subjected.
