Uitvlugt police have arrested a 68-year-old man suspected of two attempts to take young girls away.

Officers from Uitvlugt police station took a 68-year-old man into custody during the night of Thursday 2 April 2026. The arrest took place at an address in Leiding 8A, with support from the police force in Leiding. The suspect is alleged to have attempted on that day to take a girl under eighteen away on two separate occasions.
The first incident occurred during daylight hours. A group of children were playing when the man managed to get a five-year-old into his vehicle. The other children reacted immediately and alerted others. A nephew of the victim took his bicycle and rode to a shopping centre, where he found the child and the perpetrator together. He brought his niece back home without delay. Shortly afterwards, at approximately 1:45 p.m., a family member filed a report at Uitvlugt police station.
The second attempt took place in the evening. Around 8:55 p.m., a member of the public came to the station. He had learned from an alert neighbour that a man in a black car had a young girl next to him and appeared to want to abduct her. By this time, news of the earlier incident involving the five-year-old child had spread widely through social networks. The neighbour decided to drive after the suspect himself, managed to catch up with the vehicle and recognised the victim as the daughter of an acquaintance. He invited the ten-year-old girl to get into his own car and drove her to her family.
The investigation team had meanwhile opened a search operation, but was initially unable to find the man. Only when an inspector who had been on duty happened to drive home did he coincidentally recognise both the person and the black vehicle based on the descriptions. With help from colleagues from Leiding, the suspect was then apprehended and brought to the station for questioning.
The file shows that the arrestee previously served an extensive prison sentence in the United States for the sexual abuse of a twelve-year-old.
The public prosecutor's office has decided that the man is to remain in custody pending the continuation of the investigation.
