Man arrested following threat and collision with e-bike at carwash in Paramaribo

Suspect apprehended following threat and attempted collision on Goedheidweg

The 30-year-old Ivaniel F. was arrested by Surinamese police on Friday and remanded in custody. He is suspected of threatening to commit a crime against life and of attempted aggravated assault against a 27-year-old woman. Waterkant reports that the incident began on Monday, 1 June at a Suribet shop on Goede Zorgweg in Paramaribo.

The complainant, Ch.L., stopped at the shop that afternoon to purchase a top-up. While she was there, she was suddenly approached by a man who shouted that he would shoot her dead. The man then left the location in a green Toyota Noah.

Later that same afternoon, Ch.L. was riding her black e-bike from her residence towards Goedheidweg. At the level of a carwash, she saw the green Toyota Noah driving towards her. Due to the vehicle's manoeuvre, she was forced to swerve, lost control of her e-bike and fell onto the road. The driver continued without stopping.

During her statement, the woman explained that the cause lay in an earlier conflict at the same Suribet shop. She had addressed two boys who were sitting on her parked e-bike and, according to her, were attempting to take it away. This led to an argument with the boys and other bystanders. Ch.L. recognised the man who later threatened her and attempted to hit her as one of those involved in that earlier conflict.

Upon medical examination, the woman was found to have abrasions on her right arm, right knee, right foot and left foot. She also complained of pain throughout her body. A medical certificate was issued in her name and she was referred to the Emergency Department of Academic Hospital Paramaribo.

Camera footage from a nearby shop showed that a green Toyota Noah stopped at the shop, after which the driver got out and entered the shop. A few minutes later, the vehicle left again. According to the police, the footage shows that the driver subsequently performed a manoeuvre at the level of the carwash in which it appeared he would turn right, but in doing so drove into the complainant.

After intensive investigation, police succeeded in tracing and apprehending Ivaniel F. Following consultation with the Surinamese Public Prosecution Service, he was remanded in custody.
