Police shoot fleeing suspect during family arrest on Boerbuitenweg, Paramaribo
Three family members arrested on suspicion of threatening and vandalism; a suspect was shot in the leg during an escape attempt.
Shooting incident during arrest: brother shot, fourth family member at large
A police operation near Boerbuitenweg in Suriname resulted in a shooting incident on Friday 28 August, according to Waterkant. One of the suspects attempted to escape during his arrest, after which officers shot him in the leg after warning shots proved ineffective.
The Regional Support Team Paramaribo (RBTP) and police from Munder station arrested three family members during the operation on suspicion of vandalism and threatening behaviour. Arrested were brothers M.K. and R.K. and their sister. A fourth brother managed to escape and remains at large.
The arrests followed an extended period of neighbourhood conflicts. According to preliminary investigation, the family had repeatedly been involved in disputes with residents, involving alleged threats and vandalism. On 27 August, family members were said to have engaged in such criminal acts again, after which Munder station was called in.
When officers arrived at the residence that day, the suspects were not present. After obtaining new information, police returned to the address a day later, where the three family members were found.
During the arrest, R.K. attempted to flee. Officers first fired warning shots, but these did not have the desired effect. Subsequently, aimed shots were fired and officers shot R.K. in the leg. He was taken to the Emergency Department of the Academic Hospital Paramaribo for medical treatment.
After questioning, M.K. and R.K. were held in custody pending further investigation. The arrested sister was released after her questioning.
The fourth brother, who was also said to be involved in the case, has not yet been arrested. The Paramaribo Criminal Investigation Service has taken over the investigation.
