Police officer detained with marijuana in suitcases at Burnside checkpoint
A 38-year-old officer of the Suriname Police Force has been held in custody after marijuana was found in his vehicle at Burnside. Three other suspects were arrested at the same checkpoint.
Officer and three others arrested at checkpoint in Coronie district
A 38-year-old police officer, identified as R.L., has been held in custody after a substantial quantity of marijuana was discovered during a vehicle inspection at the Burnside checkpoint in Coronie district. This was reported by De Ware Tijd on the basis of a statement from the Suriname Police Force (KPS).
The drugs were hidden in two suitcases and packed as compressed blocks in plastic. Upon further examination, it was found to be dried leaves, stems and seeds with strong resemblance to the cannabis sativa plant, according to the KPS.
Following his arrest, R.L. was transferred to Totness police station for appearance. His vehicle and the drugs found have been seized. The case has been handed over to the Police Investigations department for further investigation.
Also on Sunday evening, three other suspects were arrested at the same checkpoint. These are the 18-year-old J.A. from Guyana and the Surinamese H.N. (39) and B.K. (42). Upon inspection of their vehicle, plant matter—dried leaves, stems and seeds—was found, packed in multiple plastic bags.
The trio was also transferred to Totness police. Following consultation with the Public Prosecutor's Office, all three have been held in custody. Both their vehicle and the drugs found have been seized. The further investigation is in the hands of the Narcotics Brigade.
