A police brigadier with the initials M.F. was taken into custody on Thursday, 2 July by the Surinamese Public Prosecutor's Office on suspicion of extortion. This is reported by Waterkant.
The matter came to light after a woman filed a complaint on 26 November last year. Her son had been arrested by the Narcotics Brigade for possession of narcotics. The mother learned through intermediaries that the police would release her son in exchange for payment of 2,500 euros.
She subsequently transferred half that amount, 1,250 euros, to an officer. The arrangement was that the remainder would follow once the young man was actually released. However, the promised release did not take place; on the contrary, her son's pre-trial detention was extended by one month.
When the woman wanted her deposit back, she was given different reasons each time as to why that was not possible. Eventually, she went to the authorities to file a complaint. The suspect brigadier was questioned on 2 July. After consultation with the Public Prosecutor's Office, he was remanded in custody. The investigation is ongoing.
