A 51-year-old school bus driver has been detained in Suriname after parents filed a complaint of indecent assault and sexual abuse of their nine-year-old autistic son.

The Lelydorp police bureau has detained a 51-year-old school bus driver suspected of indecent assault and sexual abuse of a nine-year-old boy with autism. The man turned himself in at the police station yesterday, after which he was taken into custody.
The parents of the victim filed a complaint on Tuesday, 19 May. According to the preliminary police investigation, the driver, who was a trusted person of the family, had touched the boy's genitals multiple times since December 2025.
The school principal summoned the parents and informed them of the offences. They were also shown video footage in which the suspect put his hands inside the child's trousers and touched his genitals.
Because the victim is a minor, the investigation has been transferred to the police Juvenile Affairs department. Following consultation with the Public Prosecutor's office, the man has been remanded in custody pending further investigation.
