A 36-year-old agent and a 37-year-old brigadier have been arrested in Suriname. They are suspected of extorting a weapons owner and subsequently selling the seized firearm.

The authorities in Suriname have taken a 36-year-old police agent and a 37-year-old brigadier into custody on Monday. The Public Prosecution Service agreed to this. Both men are suspected of coercion, abuse of power, extortion and embezzlement.
According to an informant's account, the duo stopped a man who was carrying an illegal pistol. The man asked whether the matter could be settled on the spot. The police officers allegedly demanded 2,500 US dollars. The victim, however, could not provide this.
After the firearm was taken, there is suspicion that the two senior officers resold the pistol. The aggrieved man later went to the police station in the centre and filed a complaint against the two employees.
In another incident, a 32-year-old police trainee was arrested for extortion. He allegedly demanded 400 Surinamese dollars from a motorist. Following the driver's complaint, the Public Prosecution Service decided to give the trainee only a severe warning.
