Suspect in child sexual abuse case dies in cell at Keizerstraat police station Paramaribo
E.A. (64), suspected of sexually abusing a girl aged between seven and nine years, was found dead on Saturday evening in the cells of the Centre police station. An autopsy revealed he died of natural causes.
Suspect in child abuse case dies three days after confession in Paramaribo cell
E.A., 64 years old, was found lifeless on Saturday evening in the cells of the Centre police station at Keizerstraat in Paramaribo. The man was in custody on charges of serious sexual offences against a girl who was abused between the ages of seven and nine. The victim is now ten years old. According to De Ware Tijd, an autopsy showed that the man died of natural causes.
During a routine inspection of the cells, guards found E.A. on Saturday evening without signs of life. A doctor was called to officially confirm the death. On the instructions of the Public Prosecutor's Office (OM), the body was seized for further investigation. Following the autopsy, investigators concluded that there was no indication of a crime. The remains were then handed over to relatives.
The Suriname Police Corps (KPS) reported on its website that E.A. was first traced on 21 April this year, after the Youth Affairs department received a report of sexual offences committed in both Brokopondo and Paramaribo. The girl's foster mother had discovered irregularities in the child, after which the girl disclosed what had happened. The foster mother subsequently filed a report immediately.
When officers from Youth Affairs knocked on his residence in Paramaribo on 21 April, E.A. managed to escape. For more than four months he remained out of reach of police. On 19 August he was finally apprehended, with the assistance of the Eastern Regional Support Team.
After his transfer to the police station, E.A. made a full confession during his preliminary hearing. Following consultation with the OM, he was remanded in custody in the cells of the Centre police station. Three days later he was found dead there.
