A police officer who works at the Canelones Police Department suffered gunshot wounds to a leg on Thursday morning after attempting to prevent a robbery in the Punta de Rieles neighbourhood in the Uruguayan capital.
The incident occurred when the officer, travelling on his private motorcycle on his way to work, passed through the intersection of Sagitario and Zodíaco. There he noticed a man attempting to snatch belongings from a woman, according to reporting by Montevideo Portal.
The uniformed officer began pursuing the perpetrator through nearby alleyways. When he managed to catch up with him, a physical confrontation ensued. During the struggle, the perpetrator snatched the officer's regulation pistol and fired two shots at his lower limb.
Despite being wounded, the officer did not give up. He continued fighting until he was able to regain possession of his weapon, although the assailant managed to flee before being apprehended.
Following the incident, the police officer was taken to a medical facility where he received treatment. Doctors confirmed that his condition was not serious.
The officer's motorcycle remained at the site of the attempted robbery. Investigators contacted the woman who was targeted in the assault, while the attacker remains at large and unidentified.
