A member of the Republican Guard prevented the theft of her vehicle during the early hours of Wednesday in the Peñarol neighbourhood of the Uruguayan capital, after which the alleged perpetrator was injured by gunshots and was apprehended.
The incident took place around two in the morning in the area between Dante Alighieri and Aparicio Saravia streets. The officer was resting at her residence when she heard a loud noise. Upon looking outside, she discovered a stranger inside her car.
The officer went out to confront him and the assailant exited the vehicle wielding a blade. Faced with the imminent danger, the agent drew her service pistol and fired. The robber ran to escape, but his wounds caused him to fall on the asphalt.
The man involved, 37 years old, was initially taken to the Capitán Tula health centre and later to Pasteur Hospital, where he was diagnosed with gunshot wounds. Sources from the Montevideo Police Department confirmed to El Observador that the subject has a history of eleven previous convictions.
Investigators found at the scene a spent cartridge casing, a projectile, the blade used by the criminal, and a thermos of institutional property. Public safety officers together with prosecutors are directing the corresponding investigation.
