Police officer shot in armed assault in Nuevo Ellauri
On Monday 8 June, at midday, a National Police officer was attacked on the streets of Galeano and Senda 1 in the Nuevo Ellauri neighbourhood of Montevideo. The incident was recorded in audiovisual material that circulated afterwards.
According to what was published by communicator Emiliano Wigman on Montevideo Portal, the assailants attempted to rob the uniformed officer of his regulation weapon. During the struggle, one of the criminals fired several shots at him from behind.
Fortunately, the officer was wearing a bullet-proof vest that stopped most of the impacts. However, he sustained injuries to one of his arms. Following the incident he was taken to a health facility, where doctors confirmed that his condition does not pose a threat to his life.
The criminals fled with the firearm, although they abandoned the motorcycle they had used to commit the robbery near the scene of the incident.
Following investigations, the Montevideo Police Headquarters achieved the capture of two individuals: a 20-year-old youth and a 17-year-old minor.
The case generated reactions from various unions in the sector. SUPU stated that the incident demonstrates the danger inherent in police work on the streets. Sipolna condemned the attack and highlighted the investigative work that resulted in the arrests. Sidepac, meanwhile, offered support to the wounded officer and demanded that the courts apply severe penalties if responsibility is confirmed.
