A 54-year-old man was shot dead in the early hours of Thursday in the Villa Española neighbourhood, located in Montevideo. The incident occurred near 1 a.m. at the intersection of Antonio Serratosa and José Irureta Goyena streets.
Witnesses who found the individual lying on the ground alerted the authorities through a call to 911. The deceased died at the scene of the attack.
According to a report published by Subrayado, the Shotspotter platform — which monitors firearm detonations — recorded 13 bursts of gunfire in the area. At the scene, Scientific Police personnel collected six spent shell casings corresponding to a 9-millimetre calibre weapon.
The investigation was taken on by the Homicide Department, which is part of the Complex Cases Directorate. Investigators combed the scene collecting evidence and examining video cameras in the area with the aim of obtaining clues to guide the case.
The man killed had 20 previous records in his judicial history and lived in the same neighbourhood where he was attacked.
