According to subrayado.com.uy, four Army armoured vehicles arrived in Montevideo on Monday from Florida to be deployed by the Police in the neighbourhoods with the highest crime rates in the capital and the metropolitan area.
The vehicles were transferred to the Army's Material and Armament Service, located on avenida Instrucciones, next to Battalion 13.
The government indicated that it proposes to use all available resources of the State to combat crime, with particular focus on organised crime and drug trafficking in neighbourhoods. The measure was formalised through an agreement signed between the Ministry of National Defence and the Ministry of the Interior.
Interior Minister Carlos Negro stated that the military vehicles will be driven by police officers with specialised training in charge of military personnel, or alternatively by Army soldiers. Negro clarified that, for this purpose, soldiers will be seconded from Defence to the Interior, without it being necessary for the approval of a specific law for them to carry out functions alongside the Police.
