A 30-year-old man, known by the nickname "Dybu", was arrested on Sunday morning in Sauce, in the department of Canelones. The arrest was made during a horse festival, following an investigation coordinated between the homicide units of Montevideo and Canelones.

Investigators identify him as the main leader of a criminal group that carried out an armed attack in Colón on 27 April. On that occasion, a one-and-a-half-year-old child lost his life when unknown assailants fired on the car in which he was travelling with his father, a 21-year-old young man. The child suffered a bullet wound to the head and died despite receiving care at a medical facility. The adult was injured in his limbs, shoulder and ear.

The incident took place near the intersection of Pasaje J and Aparicio Saravia. The attackers were travelling in another car. After the incident, the father went to a shop in the Eduardo Raíz and Eugenio Garzón area to seek help.

The same suspect is linked to another crime that occurred on 10 February in Las Piedras, also in Canelones. There, near 25 de Mayo and Pasaje 8, in the Corfrisa neighbourhood, two men aged 39 and 44 were killed. One of them received multiple impacts and was wearing a protective helmet. At the scene, six spent casings and four 9 mm cartridges were found. Forensic police experts determined that both deceased men had gunpowder residue on their hands, indicating that they likely resisted the assault.

Both victims from the February incident had criminal records and had served previous sentences. The younger of the two had accumulated seven entries for offences related to drug trafficking, unlawful killing, assault and obstruction, and was also wanted for a robbery. The other had twelve records for fraud, theft, obstruction and drug trafficking.

The arrested man has four previous convictions. He was handed over to the Fiscal for Complex Cases in Montevideo, given the gravity of the case involving the murdered child. In that investigation, an adolescent is already under examination and a 46-year-old man is being prosecuted for planning the group's movements.
