The courts imposed a sentence of ten months' imprisonment on a 44-year-old man who attempted to bring drugs into Unit 7, a penitentiary facility in the Canelones department. The ruling was handed down last Thursday.
The incident dates back to December of last year, when the convicted man went to the prison with a mini-fridge that was supposedly to be delivered to a 29-year-old inmate who was serving a sentence for five robberies. Security officials at the facility inspected the appliance and found inside it more than half a kilogramme of marijuana and a smaller quantity of cocaine, totalling 516 grammes of the first drug and 50 of the second.
After discovering the substance, agents from the Departmental Anti-Drug Brigade arrested the individual. The offence was classified as supply of drugs to an inmate in the degree of attempted crime, a circumstance that aggravated the sentence. The court ruled that the penalty should be served under an effective custody regime.
