On Thursday night, a 39-year-old former footballer was killed in the city of Maldonado after being struck by several bullets. The man, who had accumulated five criminal convictions, had settled in that area approximately six months ago.
Police were alerted at around 20:00, when a report came in of gunshots in the Sausalito neighbourhood. Officers who attended the scene confirmed the death of the former sportsman. According to reporting by Montevideo Portal, the deceased had played for Rampla Juniors and Platense.
In statements to the media—among them Telenoche on Channel 4—Maldonado Police chief Víctor Trezza said the man suffered numerous gunshot wounds. Trezza added that investigators are exploring different lines of enquiry to clarify the motives behind the attack.
The investigation is being handled by the 2nd Shift Prosecution Office, with support from the Command of the Police Chief, the heads of Operational Zones II and V, the Scientific Police and the Homicide Department.
