In the Argentine city of Concordia, situated across from the Uruguayan coast on the river of the same name, police officers arrested a man of Uruguayan nationality who was wanted by the judicial system of his country for alleged links to the illicit drug trade. The arrest took place in the Villa Busti neighbourhood, where the individual was found without any resistance, according to a report published by El Diario Paraná.
An international arrest warrant had been issued against the detainee by Uruguayan judges, identifying him as a possible participant in drug distribution activities. The subject had managed to cross to the Argentine side of the border and had remained in hiding there until investigation work succeeded in discovering his hideout.
The arrested man had previously had an encounter with the justice system of Entre Ríos province: on 5 March of this year he had been detained in the same city for drug possession. That record in police files expedited his identification when the global search notification came through.
Following the arrest, local agents worked jointly with immigration officials and consular representatives. Once the corresponding paperwork was completed, the detainee was transferred and handed over to Uruguayan officials to face the courts that had demanded him.
The incident highlights the joint work between both Mercosur countries in combating drug trafficking. The city of Concordia, being situated on the opposite shore from Salto, represents a sensitive zone for monitoring the passage of people and goods between both banks.
