Dublin woman sentenced for role in Hutch-Kinahan feud killing
A 46-year-old mother has been jailed for six years and three months for her role in the Hutch-Kinahan feud murder of Jamie Tighe-Ennis, the Irish Independent reports.
Tighe-Ennis, 24, was shot by a gunman as he walked home from a pub in Coolock, Dublin, in the early hours of 28 October 2017. He was the 14th victim of the feud between the Hutch and Kinahan organised crime groups.
Ciara Mahony, whose address is listed as Edmondstown Road, Ballyboden, Dublin 16, and who is originally from Artane, was extradited from Birmingham last year. She pleaded guilty to facilitating a criminal organisation in the commission of the murder between 27 and 28 October 2017.
According to Detective Sergeant Domhnall O'Connell, Mahony knew the victim personally, contacted him multiple times on a burner phone, and met him at the pub earlier that evening before he was killed. She also purchased the petrol used to burn out a black Audi — the getaway car used by the killers.
Det Sgt O'Connell told the court that Mahony knew "something serious" was going to happen to Jamie Tighe-Ennis. He agreed with her defence counsel, however, that she had been suffering from a severe crack cocaine addiction at the time and was under the influence of people involved in organised crime, including two former partners.
One of those partners, Brian Mahony, was identified as a senior figure within the Kinahan Organised Crime Group. The Criminal Assets Bureau seized the Coolock home Ciara Mahony had shared with him after the High Court ruled it to be the proceeds of crime. She had previously posted images online showing herself driving a Mercedes and on holiday in Dubai.
Mahony has one previous conviction — for robbery, recorded 24 years ago.
In a victim impact statement, the victim's father Kevin Ennis said he was sickened to learn that Mahony was herself a mother. "How would you feel if it was your child?" he said. "You can rot in hell."
Jamie Tighe-Ennis's mother, June Tighe, described her son's death as "violent, sudden and devastating." "He was loved," she said. "He mattered. He had a life, a future, but we will never make the memories that should have been made with him."
Judge Martin Nolan accepted that the victim's family had been devastated by the murder and said Mahony could not distance herself from the role she played. He set a headline sentence of nine to ten years but reduced it to six years and three months in light of mitigating circumstances.
