Cork man remanded in custody over fatal Hollyhill stabbing

A 56-year-old man has appeared before Cork District Court charged with the murder of a community employment scheme worker killed in the city last November, rte.ie reports.

Kieran Long, of 65 Ardcullen, Hollyhill, Cork, faces a charge of murdering Mark O'Connell, aged 38, who was originally from Farranree, Co Cork.

Emergency services were called to a house at Hollyville, Hollyhill, at 4.30am on 16 November last year, where they found Mr O'Connell seriously injured with stab wounds. He was taken to Cork University Hospital, where he later died.

Detective Garda Mick Dolan gave evidence of arresting Long at his home on Tuesday night and charging him at Gurranabraher Garda Station. Long made no reply when the murder charge was put to him, Detective Garda Dolan told the court.

No bail application was made in the District Court, as bail cannot be granted at district level on a murder charge. Solicitor Shane Collins-Daly indicated he had instructions to seek bail before the High Court.

Judge David Waters remanded Long in custody for one week. He is due to appear before the court again next Wednesday.
