Dublin woman faces drug smuggling charges at Portlaoise Prison

Leinsterexpress.ie reports that a 20-year-old Dublin woman has appeared in court accused of attempting to smuggle drugs into Portlaoise Prison on January 15 last.

Kadie McCarthy, of Churchwell Gardens, Belmayne, Coolock, Dublin 15, faces charges of possessing drugs for sale or supply and bringing drugs into the prison on Dublin Road, Portlaoise.

Garda Kevin Purcell told the court that McCarthy made no reply when charged and that there was no objection to bail. McCarthy told the court her solicitor was "on strike" and that she was currently on maternity leave. Solicitor Aonghus McCarthy said he was willing to stand in for her legal representative.

Judge Andrew Gubbins granted legal aid to the absent solicitor and asked about directions in the case. Garda Purcell indicated the matter was to be dealt with in the district court.

However, the court heard the alleged drugs were valued at €7,900. Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said he would "like to see a letter from the DPP," adding that he believed the value was "a bit high" for a local direction to be given. He requested an adjournment.

Judge Gubbins adjourned the case to Portlaoise District Court on November 16.
