Romanian national remanded in custody over Finglas bank holiday killing
A 47-year-old man appeared before a special sitting of Dublin District Court on Tuesday night charged with the murder of his partner at their home in Finglas, north Dublin, dublinlive.ie reports.
Daniel Simion Toader, a Romanian national with an address at Melville Terrace, Finglas, made no reply when charged with the murder of Loredana Morosanu, 48, who was killed in the early hours of Monday morning — the August bank holiday.
Detective Sergeant Niall Murray of Finglas Garda Station told Judge Máire Conneely that he arrested Mr Simion Toader at the station at 6.58pm on Tuesday, and that the murder charge was put to him at 7.56pm. "He made no reply," Det Sgt Murray said.
Mr Simion Toader, who appeared in court wearing a blue jumper and grey sweatpants, spoke briefly to a Romanian interpreter during the hearing but did not otherwise address the court. The brief hearing lasted just two minutes. Bail is not a matter for the district court, and he was remanded in custody. He is due to appear again at Cloverhill District Court via video link next Tuesday at 10am.
Mr Simion Toader was not legally represented during Tuesday's proceedings due to the ongoing free legal aid dispute involving criminal defence solicitors across the country. However, Judge Conneely heard that the accused had received eight legal consultations while in custody, including one immediately before being brought before the court. Det Sgt Murray told the court that the circumstances surrounding the charge had been explained to Mr Simion Toader at length.
The body of Ms Morosanu was discovered at her apartment at Melville Terrace in Finglas in the early hours of Monday morning. She had worked in a pharmacy in Dublin and had only moved into the apartment complex in recent weeks.
