Additional knife charge for woman accused of stabbing partner in Co Dublin

A woman accused of stabbing her partner with an eight-inch chef's knife has appeared before Dún Laoghaire District Court on an additional charge connected to the same alleged incident, courtsnewsireland.ie reports.

The woman, who is in her 30s and remains in custody, already faces a charge of assaulting her partner causing him harm at the couple's Co Dublin home on 25 July. The new charge alleges that on the same date, while committing or appearing to be about to commit assault causing harm, she produced a "large kitchen knife" during a dispute in a manner likely unlawfully to intimidate another person. The charge is contrary to section 11 of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act 1990.

At a previous bail hearing, Garda Andrew Shanley told the court that gardaí were called to the address after a neighbour reported a violent domestic dispute. He said he could see blood as soon as he opened the front door. The man sustained a stab wound to his right forearm, allegedly caused by the eight-inch blade, was taken to hospital and later discharged.

Garda Shanley had objected to bail under section 2 of the Bail Act at that earlier hearing, citing the seriousness of the allegation and the risk of a further serious offence if the woman were released. Judge Anne Watkin refused bail on 27 July, describing the allegation as extremely serious. "The likelihood is huge that it would happen again," Judge Watkin said at the time, adding that the main issue was the risk posed to the injured party.

Objections to bail were also raised in relation to the additional charge on Tuesday, but no bail hearing took place. The woman's barrister, Silvia Maria Crowley BL, noted that her client is already due to make a bail application in the High Court on Friday and asked that the additional charge be addressed on the same occasion.

Judge Watkin agreed and remanded the woman in custody at the Dóchas Centre until Friday. The court also heard the case will proceed on indictment, with a book of evidence expected within six weeks.
