Two gardaí injured in altercation at Letterkenny public services office
Two gardaí were hospitalised following an incident at Donegal County Council's Public Services Centre on Neil T Blaney Road in Letterkenny on Thursday afternoon, breakingnews.ie reports.
Gardaí were called to the premises just before 3pm after an altercation involving staff. Two officers sustained injuries during the incident and were taken to Letterkenny University Hospital.
Two people were arrested at the scene — a man in his 30s and a woman in her 30s — and brought to Letterkenny Garda Station. The woman was subsequently released and is expected to appear at Letterkenny District Court on Monday.
Abdou Abouzid, aged 35, was detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 and appeared before a court on Friday afternoon, where he was charged with four offences.
The charges relate to the incident on 23 April 2026 at the same location. Abouzid is accused of assaulting Garda Daniel Murphy and Garda Lee Scanlon, contrary to Section 2 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act 1997. He also faces a charge of behaving in a manner contrary to Section 6 of the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act 1994, as suspected by Garda Murphy, and a further charge of using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour with intent to provoke a breach of the peace — both contrary to provisions of the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act 1994, as amended by the Intoxicating Liquor Act 2008.
Solicitor Rory O'Brien, appearing for Abouzid, indicated that gardaí had no objections to bail and that his client understood the conditions attached. Those conditions include surrendering his passport card, residing at his home address at Hazelbrook Crescent, Long Lane, Letterkenny, and signing a bond in his own sum of €150.
Garda Sergeant Noel O'Donnell of Letterkenny Garda Station told the court that further charges in the case were likely.
Judge Emile Daly adjourned the matter until Monday, 27 April, to allow the Director of Public Prosecutions to issue directions. Legal aid was granted to the accused.
