Fugitive rescued from drifting boat, handed to Jamaican police

Cayman News Service reports that Michael Gollab, a 22-year-old Jamaican national wanted by the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) for attempted murder, has been arrested in Jamaica following a rescue at sea on Saturday night.

Gollab had been a fugitive for two months after allegedly attempting to kill a woman he knew during an altercation at a George Town bar in June. He was located aboard the J Big Cot, a broken-down vessel encountered by a cargo ship travelling from the Cayman Islands to Jamaica.

At approximately 9:30pm, the cargo ship crew found the distressed boat and rescued its three occupants — Gollab, a Caymanian, and another Jamaican national — who had been drifting at sea for roughly five days.

All three men were transported to Kingston, the cargo vessel's next scheduled port of call, where they arrived on Sunday night. One of the men was identified as Gollab upon arrival. All three were handed over to Jamaican police and remain in custody there, according to the RCIPS.

"The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation by the RCIPS, in collaboration with regional partners, including the Jamaica Constabulary Force," the RCIPS stated, also thanking the public for their assistance in helping locate Gollab over recent weeks.

Anyone with information regarding the circumstances or the vessel involved is asked to contact George Town CID at 949-4222. Anonymous tips can be submitted via the RCIPS Confidential Tip Line at 949-7777, through the RCIPS website, or via the Cayman Crime Stoppers website and app.
