Boston man sentenced to nearly six years for petrol bomb attack on officers
A 37-year-old man from Boston, Lincolnshire, has been jailed for five years and eight months after throwing a petrol bomb at police and threatening them with an imitation firearm, bbc.co.uk reports.
David Wiatrowski, of Bradford Road, Boston, appeared at Lincoln Crown Court on Friday, where the sentence was handed down. In July he was found guilty of attempting to cause an explosion with intent to endanger life. In February he had already admitted possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence, affray, and criminal damage.
The incident took place on New Year's Day, when Wiatrowski used a hammer to smash windows at an Aldi store in Boston. Police said he told officers he was "bored of life, feeling depressed" at the time. When officers arrived to arrest him, he was carrying what appeared to be a firearm in a holster on his right hip.
Wiatrowski shouted at officers to get back in their vehicle, then lit a rag inside a bottle and threw it towards them. He subsequently made a motion with the imitation gun as if preparing to fire. CCTV footage captured him earlier attempting to fill a drinking bottle with petrol.
He fled the scene but was arrested ten days later after a member of the public responded to a police appeal.
Following sentencing, Detective Constable Jamie McCormack praised the officers for responding "swiftly and selflessly to protect the public." He also thanked the multiple teams across Lincolnshire Police and regional partners whose work led to Wiatrowski's identification and arrest.
