Husband charged with murder of Norfolk GP found dead during sleepover
Mark Cain has been charged with the murder of his wife Hannah Cain, a general practitioner found dead at the family home in Dersingham, Norfolk, The Sun reports. The Crown Prosecution Service confirmed the charge on Wednesday.
Hannah Cain, known professionally as Dr Hannah Terry and described as being in her 40s, was discovered at around 2.20am on 4 October. Norfolk Police launched an immediate investigation. A man in his 40s was arrested the same day.
Michael Devaney of the Crown Prosecution Service said: "The Crown Prosecution Service has decided to prosecute Mark Cain for the murder of Hannah Cain following a police investigation into an incident at her home in Dersingham. We have worked carefully with Norfolk Police during their investigation. Our thoughts remain with the family of Hannah Cain at this time."
A first hearing is scheduled at Norwich Magistrates' Court on Wednesday 7 October.
Sleepover in progress when body was found
It is understood that Hannah Cain was hosting a children's sleepover at the property on the night she died. Her children's friends had to be escorted back to their families as police erected a cordon around the house, which is thought to back onto land forming part of the King's Sandringham Estate.
Several bouquets of flowers were laid at the scene in the days that followed.
Village described as quiet and crime-free
The death shocked residents of Dersingham, a small village on the edge of the Sandringham Estate in West Norfolk. Locals described it as a friendly, low-crime community.
One neighbour said they were "lost for words" upon hearing the news. "She was just a lovely human being with gorgeous young children. Something's obviously gone very badly wrong," they said.
A neighbour in his 90s who lives next door told reporters he was unaware of events until police arrived. "I very rarely saw them, the children were lovely. They used to kick their football into my garden and I'd throw it back to them, or they'd come and ask me if they could come in and look for it," he said.
One local said Dersingham "might not have a centre but it's got a heart," while another described it as the sort of place "where if you forget to lock your car and leave it out all night nothing will happen to it."
Medical practice temporarily closed
Hannah Cain worked as a GP at Grimston Medical Centre in King's Lynn. The practice remained closed the day after her death, citing "extremely difficult circumstances."
A statement posted to the practice's social media read: "We are sorry to let patients know that Grimston Medical Centre, including the dispensary, is temporarily closed due to extremely difficult circumstances affecting our practice team. We apologise for the disruption and appreciate your patience and understanding at what is a very difficult time for our colleagues."
She also worked privately at Norfolk Sky Aesthetics, a cosmetic treatment company.
Tributes were posted online by patients and community members. One wrote on Facebook: "Fly high and sleep well Dr Terry. You never deserved this to happen, heaven has gained an angel. You were a lovely doctor who listened to us and helped us. Thinking of you and your family and your children and friends."
Investigation ongoing
Detective Inspector Alix Wright of the Norfolk and Suffolk Major Investigation Team said officers were in the early stages of establishing the exact circumstances surrounding the woman's death. "I'd ask anyone who believes they may have information that could help our investigation to please share this with us," Wright said.
