A 20-year-old forensics student has pleaded guilty to the murder of a sex worker he lured to a plastic-lined "kill room" inside an Airbnb property, itv.com reports.

Benjamin William Day, an undergraduate at the University of Worcester, was arrested wearing a khaki top of the kind worn by the lead character in US television drama Dexter. He had inflicted 78 knife wounds on Maria Saceanu, 24, and had begun to dismember her body.

Day, who was 19 at the time of the killing, changed his plea to guilty on the second day of his trial at Wolverhampton Crown Court, following discussions with his barrister.

Prosecutor Rachel Brand KC told the court on Monday that Day spent several hours preparing the kill room at the Airbnb property in the Tividale area of the West Midlands, approximately 20 miles from his home in Redditch, Worcestershire.

Day had been expected to argue self-defence, claiming he had set up the room to film a "tribute" to Dexter intended for TikTok. Instead, after an hour-long delay to proceedings on Tuesday, he returned to the dock and entered a guilty plea, appearing to smirk as he nodded towards the court clerk.

Dressed in a dark suit and maroon patterned tie, Day was remanded in custody. He is due to be sentenced on 4 December.
