Masked youths hurl stones and bottles at officers in Creevagh Heights
An investigation has been launched after police came under attack from masked youths in Co. Derry on Friday night, irishpost.com reports.
Superintendent Claire Hamilton said officers were present in the Creevagh Heights area as part of a policing operation when a group of youths began to gather and threaten them. The situation escalated into a direct attack on officers.
"Some of the youths were wearing masks, some were also armed with weapons, while some had tins of paint and fireworks," Supt Hamilton said. "They subsequently proceeded to throw items, including stones and bottles, at officers, causing damage to two police vehicles."
No injuries to officers were reported. Crowds dispersed at around 11.30pm, and no further disturbances were recorded overnight.
Hamilton said on Saturday that evidence gathered during the incident would be reviewed to identify those involved. "This is completely unacceptable behaviour — attacking officers while they're performing duties to protect the public — and we know it is not welcomed by the wider community," she said.
She added that engagement with local representatives is ongoing as police work to maintain safety for both the public and their own officers. "Our officers continually put themselves in harm's way to protect the community," Hamilton said.
