Knife attack at Manchester Arndale Centre prompts city centre patrol increase
A man was stabbed inside the Arndale Centre in Manchester on Saturday afternoon, manchestereveningnews.co.uk reports, with two teenagers subsequently arrested in connection with the incident.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said officers were called to reports of an assault at the shopping centre at around 12.50pm. The victim suffered what is believed to be a slash wound to his arm, with police describing the injuries as minor.
Two men — aged 18 and 19 — were arrested on suspicion of affray and possession of a bladed article. Both remained in custody on Saturday afternoon.
Video footage circulating on social media shows an Arndale Centre security guard kicking a knife across the floor and securing it under his feet near an advertising hoarding before police arrived. Separate footage appears to show a man being restrained near the same hoarding while a group of young men shout and attempt to reach him. Punches are thrown before security guards intervene.
In a statement, GMP said: "This is an isolated incident with no wider threat to the public. However, people can expect to see extra patrols in place across the city centre this weekend."
The force confirmed the incident was not linked to a separate stabbing at the same location the previous Saturday, 17 October, in which a 14-year-old boy was stabbed on the ninth level of the Arndale Centre's multi-storey car park. The teenager was reported to be in a stable condition in hospital, with suspects in that case currently on police bail following two arrests.
No further details about Saturday's victim have been released, and his age has not been confirmed.
